An Example Of Why You Need To Keep Your Guard Up

November 2, 2011 By Kevin Muldoon

I came across the video below of a Taekwondo do match that only lasted seconds. There was only one kick thrown – a spinning kick to the head from the fighter with the white training trousers. It was a great kick and an example of how powerful Taekwondo kicks should be however the kick should never have landed.

Look at how low the hands are of the fighter in the black shorts. No fighter should ever drop their hands that low, particularly in a fight where super man punches and high flying kicks are expected; even MMA fighters keep their hands higher and they have to watch for takedowns.

It does look like the fighter in the black shorts wasn’t prepared. In the slow motion replay you can see him putting his hands up to touch gloves and then tried to raise his hands again, though I don’t think it excuses his error. It just illustrates that you can’t switch off for a second in a fight; whether it be in the street or in an organised tournament.

Have a look at the video and let me know what you think.
